Questions About Cycling the Déise Greenway?
Find answers to common questions about our guided cycling experiences, the route, and what to expect
Yes, it's genuinely flat — the route follows the old railway line with minimal elevation changes. That's exactly why we chose it for mature cyclists. You'll find it much easier to enjoy the coastal scenery when you're not battling hills, and our guides pace things to suit everyone's fitness level, whether you're getting back into cycling or already quite active.
We offer both half-day rides (around 2–3 hours including stops) and full-day experiences (4–5 hours with a proper lunch break). The half-day option covers about 12–15 km, while full-day riders typically do 20–25 km depending on pace and how long people want to linger at heritage stops.
You can bring your own, which we'd recommend if it's already set up for your comfort. If you don't have one, we've got hybrid bikes available for hire that are specifically adjusted for comfortable, upright riding — no racing position here.
Our guides set a conversational pace — if you can chat comfortably, you're at the right speed. We take regular breaks at scenic spots and refreshment points, so there's no pressure to go faster than feels good. Honestly, most people find they can do more than they expected once they're on the flat route with friendly company.
Bring water, sunscreen, a helmet, and comfortable clothes — we'll send a full packing list when you book. The route is perfect for beginners because it's separated from traffic, mostly off-road, and our guides know every section. If you've been away from cycling for a while, our skills refresher workshop is brilliant for rebuilding confidence before your first ride.
Spring through autumn (April to October) is lovely for coastal views and weather. Summer's busy but bright, while quieter shoulder seasons mean fewer crowds and still-pleasant riding. Winter rides are possible but chilly — we'd recommend checking with us first about conditions and daylight hours.
